Kester speaks up, “That rat who pushed past us - he seems like he’s up to no good. How about we follow him? I have a feeling that he’ll lead us to the source of the trouble here.”
Eared knows for experience that Kester’s hunches often work out well, so he agrees, and they run to the door to see where the rat is going. They see him head up the stairs toward the shopping district, so they quickly dash ahead to watch from around a corner.
The rat looks around, presumably to check that no one is watching, and ducks into a dark alley between some of the merchant’s stores. Eared and Kester follow to the mouth of the alley, with Eared leaning around the corner to see what’s happening.
Since this action requires a bit of stealth, I’m going to roll a DEX save for Eared here. If he fails, the rat will notice him, otherwise he’ll be able to see whatever is going on. Eared’s DEX is 10 (his stats are here), so this roll needs to be a 10 or below in order to be successful.
Eared manages to remain silent as he peers down the alley - not having all his merchandise with him probably helps with his ability to be stealthy. He gets a good look at everything going on.
The rat they followed is deep in discussion with another rat who is holding a heavy-looking bolt over his shoulder - definitely not someone that Eared wants to encounter on his own! He can’t quite make out what they’re saying, but they’re talking quickly, and the other rat is gesturing to a large sack overflowing with food items. Eared gets the feeling that this is a handover - the rat they followed is intending to take this bag of clearly stolen items somewhere where it will likely never be seen again.
That must be the hijacked food, thinks Eared.
Before he can think too hard about what to do, the rat with the heavy bolt climbs up a ladder at the back of the alley and runs off, leaving his companion with the sack of food. The remaining rat picks up the sack and starts making his way to the mouth of the alley, where Eared and Kester are hiding!
