When we wrote the the descriptions for the Hamlet of Snackburg way back yonder, Hugh and I were both excited about the prospect of a little hook to a post apocalyptic setting. This hook was the entry title Tunnel to Old Pantryville. For the past couple months I’ve been brainstorming what Old Pantryville, and an adventure around it, could look like. Well, this month let me introduce y’all to Old Pantryville.
Old Pantryville was the seasons-past settlement of mice in the region (more on this later in the post) that at some time in the not too distant past was nuked! Well, fumigated to be more accurate. All treasure was abandoned by the few that survived the cataclysm. Any attempt to salvage the past has ended in ruin with a 0% return rate. Are your mouse adventurers of The Rolling Coast brave enough to delve.
This is not just a dungeon crawl but rather a procedural “depth-crawl” that has some “boardgamey” like mechanics to facilitate the complexity and difficulty of “going deeper”. There are also a ton of random tables ensuring no two delves are the same.
Good luck!
Here is the description from the adventure:
The Perilous Excursion into Old Pantryville
Many seasons ago, before Rolling Coast was ever an amusement park for the giants, this property was an old drive-in theater. The Pavilion was at one time the ticket booth and snack shack of that forgotten attraction. Within the walls of the structure was the Colony of Pantryville. Once a hustling and bustling community of mice and rats, Pantryville attracted rodentkind from far and wide. Their abundance was not rivaled in all the mouse kingdoms. But then the theater closed. Abundance dried up into famine, and the colony dwindled to the few noble families and their heirlooms. Then, as a ray of hope, the land was acquired and the amusement park began construction. Upon its completion, abundance returned and a new generation of rodents moved in. But now, rather than peace, the rats were hostile, and the mouse noble were forced to flee - leaving the generations of wealth behind. The giant then did the unthinkable - and apocalypse for rodentkind! They laced the foods with poison, they fumigated the walls - and what was once the abundant Colony of Pantryville is now a desolate and forgotten ruin.
Seasons later the Hamlet of Snackburg was founded and all memory of Pantryville was lost. That was until an expansion project uncovered a lost tunnel in the walls - leading to the colony of ages past. An expedition was drafted, but all those who ventured in seemingly perished in what lay beyond. Snackburg’s Mayors have sealed the passage for good.
A month ago, a descendant of one of those Pantryville nobles, Zaatar Strawfellow, came to Snackburg with a ledger cataloging the riches lost to the doomsday of bygone seasons. Zaatar offers a 1000 pip reward and promise of all spoils found to any adventuring party daring enough to attempt the journey. She only desires her family’s Dragonfly Brooch (2500 pips).
